Garden Activities and Events

Garden Tending

Now that the Garden is fully laid out and planted, our duty is to manage its life.

We aim to give each feature the particular kind of care it needs when it needs it, and in the process our gardeners learn and develop valuable skills. Members become well-versed in several skills and share them with others interested in learning more.

Workdays and Workshops

Workdays are run by the Garden and open to the public. Some are devoted to trainings by experts while others are opportunities for us to work on the Garden.

At our Workdays we do a variety of activities, some examples include the spring pruning of roses, the pruning and care of fruit trees, the fall care of herbaceous perennials, and stone wall construction.

Details of planned activities are announced to our mailing list. If you are not subscribed, please join.

Events

We hold events throughout the year as a way of showing the beauty of our Garden and educating the community on all it has to offer.

Gardening Party

Friends and neighbors celebrate the Garden with us every year in June. Children of all ages delight in the flowering plants, look around for pollinators, get hands-on with light planting and compost turning, and enjoy demonstrations like a beekeeping show-and-tell. The Party is accompanied by light refreshments and music.

Pumpkin Party

In the fall, the community comes together to enjoy the Garden in its autumnal splendor and celebrate the end of the gardening season. At our annual Pumpkin Party, children of all ages are invited to decorate pumpkins that they can take home. We also provide educational opportunities that are accompanied by light refreshments and music.

Beekeeping

The Garden's beehive is in the care of Member-Gardeners who have taken training through the New York City Beekeeping Association and continue to participate in the NYC Beekeeping Meet-Up Group. The hives, bees, equipment, and suits are owned by the individual beekeepers. Opportunities to learn more about beekeeping are available to our Members.

Educational Opportunities

We welcome visits by school classes throughout the year. We’re happy to talk with teachers and community group leaders about possible activities and tailor visits to what is being taught or is important to students.

Garden Administration

The Poplar St. Community Garden is led by a volunteer Coordinating Committee of five active members: Lead Gardener, Treasurer, Schedule Coordinator, and two others with diverse responsibilities. Other member-gardeners take on roles such as Chief Composter, Water Brigade Dispatcher, and Website Manager, and opportunities to lead special projects are always available.
